# Consumer Debt Across the U.S.

Canonical: https://mydebtlens.com/Consumer-Credit-Volume

A U.S.-focused source-backed view of mortgages, credit cards, auto loans, and student loans: what American households already owe, and what was newly opened in the latest CFPB month.

The American debt market is easier to read when existing balances and new borrowing are kept separate. A mortgage balance, credit-card balance, auto loan, and student-loan account can all affect a household budget differently. This overview keeps those categories side by side and links to the state-by-state pages for each market.

## National snapshot
- **Total household debt:** $18.8T as of Q1 2026.
- **Latest CFPB new-credit period used on the category pages:** Oct 2025.

## What this data does and does not show

CFPB Consumer Credit Trends data are aggregated summaries from a nationally representative sample of consumer credit records. This page focuses on new credit activity, not repayment stress or delinquency.

The category pages provide the full state year-over-year table and national monthly history behind their maps and charts.

- [Managed public-data manifest](/data/debt-data/manifest.json)

## Limitations
- This page shows new credit activity and year-over-year geographic changes; it does not show whether borrowers are struggling to repay.
- The state map uses CFPB geographic change files. The national charts use CFPB monthly lending-level files.
- The most recent months in origination datasets may be revised or less complete than older months, so recent movements should be read cautiously.
